Distance Learning

Guatemala has been in quarantine for 14 weeks with all schools shut down for an indefinite period of time. To protect the kids, the schools will be the very last thing to open. The Guatemalan school year runs from January to November, and the normal Christmas break has already been cancelled by the president. And as the number of confirmed cases keep going up and up, who knows when school will return? The switch to a sustainable method of distance learning has proven to be essential to the country as a whole, but especially to our work here at PFH as we continue to move forward.

For our kids who used to come 5 days a week to learn, the switch to independent learning hasn’t been an effortless one (especially considering how some of the moms in our program haven’t reached the level of education that their children are on!) Even so, the kids and mothers are learning to step up and seek help as they check in with the teachers on a weekly schedule and over the phone as much as needed. Sofia and Nidia, two of our Guatemalan staff, have taken on the challenge of adapting the curriculum to be worked through at home with worksheets and class videos and laptops that we provide. Glendy works with the mothers who are studying, downloading flashdrives of homework and research information for those in the program who don’t have access to internet. It’s been a period of change for everyone, but we’re in it for the long haul and have developed a system that is working for our students! Please keep our kids in your prayers, that they would realize the value of the education they’re being given and stay motivated, and that God would continue to provide us with the resources necessary for their schooling!
